Background

Dr. Zachariah NewCheever serves as the Director of Bands at Nebraska Wesleyan University where he conducts the Symphonic Band, Jazz, Ensemble, teaches conducting courses, directs the Wolves of Wesleyan (WOW) Band, and teaches other courses in music education. Previously, he served as the Interim Associate Director of Bands/Director of Athletic Bands at Austin Peay State University, the Associate Director of Bands/Director of 鈥淭he Legend鈥 Marching Band at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, and the Wind Ensemble/Pep Band Director at Trevecca Nazarene University. 

Prior to his academic appointments, NewCheever was a doctoral conducting student at the University of Colorado and a graduate assistant in university  bands at Austin Peay State University. During this time, he was involved in all aspects of the band programs, including the athletic bands and guest conducting all concert ensembles. At APSU, he was the director of the middle school band through their Homeschool Music Program.

NewCheever maintains an active teaching, conducting, and clinician schedule with engagement throughout the United States. He has guest conducted high school and middle school bands in Nebraska, Tennessee, Pennsylvania, Colorado, Indiana, Maryland, and Kentucky. Additionally, he continues to compose/arrange, drill design, and clinic for athletic bands and marching contest at both the high school and collegiate levels. His compositions and arrangements have been premiered by groups such the University of Colorado, Austin Peay State University, the University of Central Arkansas, and The Baylor School in Chattanooga, TN. He also maintains his ties to the marching arts by serving on staff with Obsidian Winds (WGI Independent Open ensemble) in Nashville, TN. 

NewCheever holds a Doctor of Musical Arts in wind conducting and literature from the University of Colorado; a Master of Music in instrumental conducting; and a Bachelor of Music in music theory and composition from Trevecca Nazarene University. His primary teachers include: Dr. Don McKinney, Dr. Greg Wolynec, Dr. Matthew Dockendorf, Dr. David Diehl, Dr. Eric C.E. Wilson, and Dr. Timothy Cierpke.
